The heavy horse, also called draft horse, is often characterised as having a short, compact back,
heavy bones, and strong muscular neck. The five most common draft horses in the United States,
according to the Draft Horse Primer are the Belgian Draft (Brabant) from Belgium, the
Suffolk Punch from England, the Percheron originating in France, the Clydesdale bred by the British for
in-town drayage (freight wagons), and the great Shire, also from England. There are other Draft breeds,
such as the diminutive Haflinger, from Hafling in Austria, and the Norwejian Fjiord,
which are popular in the U.S.

The Draft Horse Primer
- Maurice Telleen / Paperback / Published 1993
Reviewer: mrlaslo from Blatant, CO United States, May 1, 2002
I've read better
I found this info very dry and hard to get thru. I much prefer the writings of Lynn Miller
(Work Horse Handbook & Training Workhorses / Training Teamsters) who is actually fun to read.
Reviewer: Melody Snow from Lillian, TX, September 16, 1998
Sets the standard on the subject of Draft Horses
Looking for a book that deals with today's draft horse? This is it. The Draft Horse Primer
describes today's breeds and the contributions they can and are still making to society.
In addition, it deals with care, breeding, harnessing, and non-mechanical (i.e. old-timey)
horse-drawn equipment. Lots of pictures illustrate the text. A fun book for the Draft Horse
enthusiast and a useful one for those wishing to return to the horse-drawn days of yesteryear.

Draft Horses : An Owner's Manual
- by Beth A. Valentine, Michael J. Wildenstein - Paperback: 231 pages, Publisher: Rural Heritage (November 2000)
Reviewer: densonfarrier from Wareham, Massachusetts USA, February 13, 2001
Great Book about Drafts, Useful for Other Breeds as Well
This is an easy to understand handbook. It covers all aspects of owning and maintaining a healthy
draft horse: with topics considered ranging from exercise to diet; hoofcare to healthcare.
The volume would serve any draft owner well, but would also make a great addition to any farrier's
library. I would also highly recommend this book to owner's of other breeds as many of the disease
processes, parasites, and lameness issues prove to be, for the most part, non-breed specific.

Modern Day Draft Horse Uses, January 21, 1999
It may seem like a pricey book but it is worth every penny. It is beautifully illustrated
and gives an accurate picture of the role of the modern day draft horse. If you are tired of
draft horse books that only look to the past, this book is definitely for you.

They've done it again!
Cris Peterson and Alvis Upitis have done it again!! This book combines well-written text with
gorgeous pictures. It shows the importance of draft horses in the early 20th century in
agriculture in the United States. This should be in every primary classroom to show kids
how far we have come in 100 years. Mrs. Peterson writes clearly and in simple language for
children to understand tough concepts. --This text refers to the School & Library Binding

The Percheron Horse in America
- Joseph Mischka - Hardcover, 179 pages, Heart Prairie Pr (October 1991)
Customer Reviews
Robert Wagner from Remington, Indiana USA, 5 out of 5 stars A Graphic History of Percherons in This Country., July 5, 2000
I chanced upon this book while browsing for a title to donate to our small-town local
library in memoriam for a deceased friend who was very active in old time farming displays
with draft horses. (A practice we substitute for funeral flowers) Having grown up on the
edge of the Percheron epoch in this country, I bought this book for myself. Upon reading it,
I found a comprehensive history of the Percheron Horse that takes up where the previous history
of the Percheron Horse leaves off. It's all here, the detailed story of the rise and fall of the
glistening blacks, grays and dappled draft horses of yesterday. We find that the old gray mare
certainly ain't what she used to be and how that all came about. We travel in time from the
massive production of the American Percheron breeding movement in this country to the near
extinction of the Association and the movement of their offices from the Chicago Stockyards
to a small rural farm in Indiana, where the incubus of the Association survived. Then,
the influx of interest in draft horses grew and the breed proliferated to the levels of today.
The names which ring famous throughout the history of the breed, not only of the horses, but of
the men and women who made the breed here in America are featured along with graphic illustrtions.
This book is not only packed with the history of the Percheron horse in America, but is full of
pictures from the beginning to the end pages which feature detailed timelines and chronological
tables defining the rise, fall, and resurgence of the breed. If you are interested in horses,
read this book. It will deepen your understanding of the majesty and dedication of breeding
and change forever your ideas of the "old gray mare".
